Delivering change into ever evolving and expectant businesses

Posted on : 29th November 2017

It’s difficult being a project manager and programme lead but it seems to be getting increasingly harder these days. Not only are you asked to deliver more projects and programmes with smaller budgets in shorter time frames, using less resource from the business (whilst maintaining quality) but projects are now faced with more competition and more challenging bottom lines than ever before.

The business case must do more than “stack up” with clear ROI and the assigned benefits MUST be realised.

In modern project delivery environments and work landscapes, it seems to be evolving and shifting at high speed, with changing business practices and new technologies emerging, not to mention stakeholders and customers continuously revising their expectations, the pressure to deliver more with less is higher than ever before.

The need to be flexible and agile is a prerequisite for any project or programme, regardless of size or sector. This does not though translate to meaning that you can get away with poor programme definition and governance, scope creep and throw a poor-quality output over the fence and expect the people to embrace and embed change.

As revealed in a recent survey, project success is four times higher in organisations where the business strategy is clear to programme and project leaders, clear to your teams and people and where the change and transformation business unit is actively aligned with the delivery of the organisation’s vision, strategy and objectives.

PRINCE2 has contributed greatly in providing a common language across team members, combined with a highly structured, yet flexible, versatile and scalable approach to project management. Yet it is only a methodology and tool kit.

It’s great to all be speaking a common language but not so useful if you’re pulling in different directions and don’t fully understand why you’re heading the way you’re heading.
