Using Champions to Deliver Business Change

Posted on : 16th November 2017

Change…..using champions and the business.

Change is ever-present but all too often projects start with excitement and enthusiasm yet fail to implement sustainable change.

Change programmes and projects fail because people do not change their behaviour.

We have all seen both large and small scale change fail. A significant number caused by people not changing their behaviours or, after a short period of time, reverting back to old behaviours.

Most projects tend to work in a relatively isolated environment (the project room), which means they place more emphasis on project deliverables than sustainable behavioural change.

A way to facilitate change and bridge that gap is with change champions. Yet many only engage when nearing delivery and starting to develop training packs and roll out plans. Why not use your business to help in the requirement gathering, development, testing and therefore your business SME’s are naturally your champions that take the deliverable forward and into BAU with the credibility and understanding it requires. – Change champions can make change a success.

Identifying a change champion each business unit, team or process area affected by the change, is an approach that is highly successful.

To follow on from this I would add that an organisation which recognises the need for change and wants to get it right, will engage with staff and customers to co-create the change, not impose or enforce it.
